Check last year.s Gardener.s Diary to ensure you remember to add your favourite gardening tips. Clean and sharpen your cutting tools in preparation for the year ahead. It.ll prevent the spread of disease and they.ll be much more effective.
February
When sowing seeds, choose compost that.s specific for the plant to give yours the best chance of survival.
March
Feed the birds, it.ll encourage them into your garden to make your plants look even more beautiful. Don.t forget they do a very good job of eating unwanted insects!
April
Start sowing seeds, but check the instructions on the packet for best results. Make notes of where you.ve planted bulbs and transfer it to next year.s Gardener.s diary.
May
Plant up pots and hanging baskets.
June
Dead-head flowers to encourage new growth. Rake the lawn before mowing as it discourages weeds and diseases.
July
Weed and Water. Prune any shrubs that have finished blooming.
August
Check the support of all your plants in readiness for the winter winds.
September
Plant your spring bulbs. Trim hedges. Remove any rose buds that don.t look promising before the early frosts arrive.
October
Divide herbaceous plants and don.t forget to label them. Add their height and colour if you.ve room on the label.
November
Plant tulips in double layers (they.ll all come up together). Design your patio planting for the summer. Write on your Christmas list, a new Gardener.s Diary please!
December
Prepare new borders and remove any dead leaves or debris from the lawn.
